White Pine Insurance Company was formed under the name Mid-Continent Insurance Company in 1969 as a stock insurance company which was originally domiciled in Pennsylvania. The company's main focus was auto physical damage insurance. In 1997 White Pine took a different approach when Myron R. Fetterolf took ownership of the company after purchasing the company's stock. From here, the company started writing surety bonds and inland marine insurance primarily connected to the coal mining business that predominated throughout Western and Southwestern Pennsylvania at that time. The next year the company also began writing fire and allied lines on dwelling accounts. Auto physical damage still accounted for half of the premium volume. White Pine continued to expand its product line by writing commercial multi peril and other liability coverage for small commercial accounts.
On December 31, 2010 the company was purchased by Conifer Holdings Inc., a Southfield, Michigan based insurance holding company and owner of Conifer Insurance Company. Conifer Insurance Company is domiciled in Michigan and has earned a B++ AM Best rating [secure with "Good" ability to fulfill all obligations of policyholders] and specializes in writing specialty commercial and personal lines.
